Before audiences knew Nyla Corvey, they knew her voice.

The Belgian singer became one of the defining vocal presences of Grafenberg, appearing throughout an electronic universe filled with synthesizers, vocoders, cosmic disco, Eastern melodies and deliberately excessive production.

Then Nyla Corvey stepped outside the machinery.

Her solo career reveals something radically different.

Born artistically from Brussels rather than Paris, London or Los Angeles, Corvey carries the elegant cultural ambiguity of a city situated between languages, influences and identities. It suits her perfectly.

Where Grafenberg expands outward, Nyla Corvey moves inward.

Piano, harp, violins, delicate percussion, xylophone, natural ambience and silence surround a voice finally given enough space to exist without electronic armour.

Her debut solo material established that language immediately.

“White Birds” became almost a manifesto for the project: harp, birdsong, piano and orchestral detail surrounding a performance of remarkable softness and sensuality.

But softness should never be confused with weakness.

Nyla’s voice can whisper, rise, fracture or suddenly become enormous. Much of her strength comes from knowing precisely when not to demonstrate it.
